OF TEACHER PHẠM HÙNG
SƠN.
THE LAW OF THE FULCRUM.
Axioms and Theorems of a Neutral System.
PART III. COROLLARIES.
Article 19. Corollaries for Culture and the Family.
I. THE FAMILY – THE FIRST FULCRUM OF A
CULTURE
In the Axioms of the Law of the Fulcrum, Teacher Phạm Hùng
Sơn affirms that every system that wishes to operate in a stable manner needs a
Fulcrum. At the same time, the Fifth Axiom opens a very important principle: An
external Fulcrum only truly has value when it awakens the internal Fulcrum.
That is a foundational argument of the Law of the Fulcrum.
From that argument, we can continue to reason with regard
to the domains of culture and the family.
If every human being needs a Fulcrum in order to form the
capacity for self-orientation and self-development, then the next question is:
Where does the first Fulcrum of every human being appear?
Before going to school, a human being has already lived in
a family.
Before coming into contact with society, a human being has
already come into contact with parents, grandparents and relatives.
Before learning knowledge, a human being has already
learned how to love, how to behave, how to trust and how to take
responsibility.
In other words, the family is precisely the first
environment in which an external Fulcrum acts so as, step by step, to awaken
the internal Fulcrum of a human being.
For this reason, under the perspective of the Law of the
Fulcrum, the family is not merely a place that nurtures life in the biological
sense.
The family is also the place where the first orientations
of character, of belief and of the system of values are formed.
If a correct Fulcrum helps a system to self-balance and
self-develop, then a family that knows how to build correct values is also
creating the conditions for each member, step by step, to form the capacity for
self-perfection.
At this point, we can arrive at a natural corollary:
The family does not only transmit
life. The family transmits the Fulcrum of life.
And it is precisely from the Fulcrums that are formed in
each family that cultural values can be preserved, continued and developed
across many generations.
That is also the reason why, under the perspective of the
Law of the Fulcrum, culture does not begin from monumental works or grand
slogans.
Culture begins from the family, because the family is the
first Fulcrum that forms, preserves and transmits the values that make up the
identity of a human being and of an entire people.
II. CULTURE IS THE RESONANCE OF
CORRECT FULCRUMS.
In the Theorem of Resonance, Teacher Phạm Hùng Sơn points
out that when the components of a system are all oriented correctly, energy is
not merely added together but also resonates so as to create a strength greater
than the sum of the separate parts.
That is a principle of every system.
From that principle, we can continue to reason with regard
to the domain of culture.
If the family is the first Fulcrum that forms the character
of each human being, then culture is precisely the result of the resonance
among the values that families together preserve and transmit across many
generations.
In other words, culture does not appear from a single
individual, nor is it created merely by regulations or slogans.
Culture is formed when many human beings share a system of
values, many families nurture a way of living, and many generations together
preserve a common spirit. It is precisely that resonance that creates the
identity of a community and of an entire people.
Under the perspective of the Law of the Fulcrum, what
constitutes the vitality of a culture is not merely the quantity of heritage
that is preserved, but first and foremost the quality of the Fulcrums that are
nurturing those values.
When in every family honesty is lived and not merely
taught; filial piety is practised and not merely mentioned; the spirit of
responsibility is transmitted through the very way parents live with their
children, then those values will naturally resonate with one another so as to
form a sustainable culture.
Conversely, if those Fulcrums gradually weaken, then even
though society still possesses cultural symbols or elaborately constructed
institutions, the vitality of the culture will gradually fade. For culture does
not exist primarily in books or architectural works; culture exists first of
all in human beings, and human beings are formed from the very Fulcrums of the
family and the community.
At this point, we can arrive at a natural corollary of the
Theorem of Resonance:
A strong culture is not a culture that
has many slogans or many regulations, but a culture in which correct Fulcrums
continually resonate, nurture and support one another through each human being,
each family and each generation.
That is also the reason why, under the perspective of the
Law of the Fulcrum, building culture does not begin from changing external
manifestations, but begins from reinforcing the Fulcrums that are forming human
beings. When the Fulcrum is placed correctly, correct values will find one
another of their own accord; when correct values resonate together, culture
becomes the most sustainable endogenous strength of a people.
If Section II answers how culture is formed, then Section
III should answer why a culture declines or flourishes.
III. CULTURAL CRISIS IS A CRISIS OF
THE FULCRUM.
In the Third Axiom, Teacher Phạm Hùng Sơn points out a very
fundamental principle:
Every imbalance begins from a shift of the Fulcrum.
That is a principle constructed for every system.
From that principle, we can continue to reason with regard
to culture and the family.
If culture is a system of values that are formed,
transmitted and resonate across many generations, then the decline of culture
is also not a random phenomenon.
It always begins from the weakening of the Fulcrums that
are supporting that system.
Ordinarily, when speaking of cultural crisis, people easily
think of the fading of tradition, the degradation of morality or impacts from
the external environment.
Those are all real manifestations.
But under the perspective of the Law of the Fulcrum, those
manifestations are not yet the first cause.
The deeper cause is that the Fulcrums that once nurtured
those values no longer have sufficient strength to orient the system.
When the family is no longer the place that sows the first
seeds of honesty, benevolence and the spirit of responsibility; when the school
only transmits knowledge while lacking the cultivation of character; when the
community elevates immediate success above sustainable values, then the
Fulcrums of culture begin to shift.
That shift does not create crisis immediately.
But over time, it changes the way human beings think,
choose and act.
That is precisely the process by which a system gradually
loses the capacity for self-balance from within.
Here, the Law of the Fulcrum opens a different way of
looking at the revival of culture.
In order to restore a culture, one cannot stop merely at
preserving heritage or launching movements.
Those things are all necessary, but they mainly act upon
the manifestations of the system.
What is more important is to restore the Fulcrums that are
creating human beings who know how to live with the values of that culture.
For heritage can be preserved in museums.
But culture only truly lives when it is preserved in human
beings.
At this point, we can arrive at a natural corollary of the
Third Axiom:
Cultural crisis does not begin from
the disappearance of values, but from the weakening of the Fulcrums that once
nurtured those values.
And precisely for that reason, the most sustainable path to
revive a culture is not to cling stubbornly to the past, but to recreate the
Fulcrums that help beautiful values to be awakened once more, to be transmitted
and to continue living in every human being, every family and every generation.
A culture does not disappear when the old houses vanish. A
culture begins to disappear when the Fulcrums that create the human beings of
that culture are no longer transmitted from one generation to the next.
IV. THE REVIVAL OF CULTURE BEGINS FROM
THE REVIVAL OF FULCRUMS.
In the Fourth Axiom, Teacher Phạm Hùng Sơn affirms a very
important principle:
A correct Fulcrum does not coerce the system, but awakens
the system’s capacity for self-balance.
That is not only a principle of movement, but also a
principle of development.
From that principle, we can continue to reason with regard
to culture and the family.
If the weakening of culture begins from the weakening of
Fulcrums, then the revival of culture also cannot begin from administrative
commands or mere calls.
A culture cannot be built by imposition.
A culture can only grow when correct values are voluntarily
received, preserved and transmitted by human beings to one another.
For this reason, what needs to be restored first of all is
not the manifestations of culture, but the Fulcrums that are nurturing culture.
That is a family that knows how to take love and
responsibility as its foundation.
That is a school that knows how to regard the formation of
character as no less important than the transmission of knowledge.
That is a community that knows how to honour honesty,
benevolence and the spirit of dedication more than ostentation or short-term
successes.
When those Fulcrums are strengthened, beautiful values will
not need to be protected by coercion.
They will spread of their own accord through the way human
beings live, the way human beings treat one another and the way each generation
educates the next generation.
That is also the moment when culture is no longer something
recorded in books or displayed in museums.
Culture becomes a vitality that is present in the daily
life of every human being.
At this point, we can arrive at a natural corollary of the
Fourth Axiom:
In order to revive a culture, one must
first of all revive the Fulcrums that are forming the human beings of that
culture.
For a people does not endure solely thanks to the heritage
of the past.
A people endures when every generation knows how to become
a Fulcrum so that beautiful values continue to be awakened, preserved and
transmitted to future generations.
• Education awakens the Fulcrum in the learner.
• Medicine awakens the Fulcrum of self-healing of life.
• Governance awakens the Fulcrum in every member of the
organisation.
• Economics awakens the Fulcrum of self-regulation of the
system.
• And with Culture, we arrive at a more general tier:
Culture is not the memory of the past.
Culture is the capacity for correct values always to find a new Fulcrum in
every generation.
• The family is the Fulcrum of the human being.
• Many families create culture.
• Culture weakens when the Fulcrum weakens.
• The revival of culture must begin from the revival of the
Fulcrum.
V. CULTURAL IDENTITY IS THE SPIRITUAL
FULCRUM OF A PEOPLE.
In the preceding articles, from the Axioms and Theorems of
Teacher Phạm Hùng Sơn, we have many times arrived at a common recognition:
every system that wishes to develop sustainably needs a Fulcrum in order to
maintain its direction in the process of movement and change.
From that recognition, we can continue to reason with
regard to a larger system: the people.
A people is not formed solely by territory, population or
institutions.
What helps a people remain itself after hundreds or
thousands of years of upheaval is precisely cultural identity.
That identity does not exist as an abstract concept.
It is present in language, in ethics, in ways of behaviour,
in historical memory and in the values that many generations together choose to
preserve.
Under the perspective of the Law of the Fulcrum, cultural
identity is precisely the spiritual Fulcrum that helps a people not to lose
itself in the process of development.
That does not mean that a culture must close itself off or
refuse to receive new values.
On the contrary, as the Theorem of Open Systems has pointed
out, a system can only develop when it knows how to receive new resources.
But reception is not synonymous with dissolution.
An open system only truly evolves when it still retains the
Anchor Point in order to preserve identity and the Fulcrum in order to
continually innovate.
That is also what we have drawn from the Theorem of the
Anchor Point and the Fulcrum.
It is the same for a people.
Cultural identity is not a wall that separates from the
world.
Cultural identity is the Anchor Point so that the people
does not lose its roots, while the Law of the Fulcrum points out the way for
the people to receive new values while still developing in harmony with itself.
At this point, we can arrive at a natural corollary:
A strong people is not a people that
rejects every influence from outside, but a people that always retains the
Fulcrum of identity so that every new value, when received, becomes a resource
that further enriches its own culture.
In my view, this is the point at which Article 19 begins to
connect very beautifully with the entire work.
In Article 17, we said that the leader is the Fulcrum of
the organisation.
In Article 18, we said that the Fulcrum is the foundation
of sustainable development.
Arriving at Article 19, we can raise it one tier higher:
If the family is the first Fulcrum of
a human being, then culture is precisely the long-term Fulcrum of a people. As
long as that Fulcrum continues to be preserved and continually transmitted, a
people still retains the capacity to renew itself without losing itself.
VI. EXPANDING THE MEANING OF THE
COROLLARY.
If one looks at culture merely as a collection of customs,
practices or traditional values, then the corollary of the Law of the Fulcrum
will stop at the scope of preserving identity.
But if one looks at culture as a living system, always in
motion, always receiving and always transmitting across many generations, then
the meaning of the Law of the Fulcrum is far broader.
From the Axioms and Theorems that Teacher Phạm Hùng Sơn has
constructed, we can continue to develop a way of looking as follows:
Every human being needs a Fulcrum in order to form
character.
Every family needs a Fulcrum in order to nurture love and
responsibility.
Every community needs a Fulcrum in order to form trust and
cohesion.
Every people needs a Fulcrum in order to preserve identity
in the flow of history.
And humanity also needs a Fulcrum so that the development
of science, economics and technology always accompanies the development of
culture and human beings.
At this point, culture is no longer merely the memory of
the past.
Culture becomes the living memory of a system, where
correct values are continually awakened, tested and transmitted from one
generation to the next.
If the Theorem of Self-Regulation shows that a system that
knows how to learn from feedback will continually perfect itself, then culture
is precisely the mechanism that helps a people store those lessons across many
generations.
Thanks to culture, each generation does not have to begin
again from zero.
Each generation is able to stand upon the Fulcrum that the
preceding generation has painstakingly built in order to continue creating,
developing and perfecting.
At this tier of meaning, culture does not merely preserve
tradition.
Culture preserves the evolutionary capacity of a people.
For this reason, under the perspective of the Law of the
Fulcrum, the endurance of a culture is not decided by the age of its heritage,
but by the capacity continually to create human beings who know how to receive,
enrich and transmit the core values of their people.
At this point, the Law of the Fulcrum begins to meet a
broader space of thought.
If the Hồng Bàng Yijing helps human beings recognise the
laws of the operation of life and of the universe, then culture is precisely
the way those laws crystallise into a way of living, into ethics and into the
identity of a community.
If the Mission of Maitreya opens the aspiration for the
evolution of human beings and of humanity, then culture is the first
environment in which that aspiration is nurtured from every family, every human
being and every generation.
The three systems therefore continue to meet in the tripod
structure that we have built.
The Mission of Maitreya points out the direction of
evolution.
The Hồng Bàng Yijing helps human beings understand the laws
of evolution.
The Law of the Fulcrum points out where one must act so
that that process can become reality in daily life.
Perhaps for that reason, when looking from the angle of
culture, we can understand more deeply the meaning of the Fulcrum.
The Fulcrum does not only help a human being to mature.
It does not only help an organisation to develop.
It does not only help an economy to operate sustainably.
At a deeper tier, the Fulcrum helps a culture continually
to be reborn in the very human beings who are inheriting and creating it.
And perhaps that is also the deepest corollary that the Law
of the Fulcrum opens with regard to culture and the family:
A culture does not truly live because
it is preserved in the past. A culture truly lives when every generation knows
how to become a Fulcrum so that correct values continue to be awakened, to
resonate and to be transmitted to the future.
• Article 15: Education awakens the human being.
• Article 16: Medicine awakens life.
• Article 17: Governance awakens the organisation.
• Article 18: Economics awakens the developing system.
• Article 19: Culture awakens the evolutionary memory of a
people.
In Article 17, we concluded with the Fulcrum becoming the
principle that connects systems of knowledge. In Article 18, we concluded with
the Fulcrum awakening the system’s capacity for self-evolution. Moving to
Article 19, we can go one tier deeper still:
The Fulcrum is precisely the mechanism
of transmission of civilisation.
Perhaps, when looking back over all the corollaries that
the Law of the Fulcrum opens with regard to culture and the family, we can
recognise a deeper meaning.
What makes a civilisation endure is not merely the works
that remain after time.
What makes a civilisation endure is the capacity for core
values always to find a new human being, a new family and a new generation that
continue to preserve and develop them.
In other words, a civilisation only truly remains alive
when its Fulcrums are still being transmitted.
At that tier of meaning, the family is no longer merely the
cell of society.
The family becomes the first bridge connecting the past
with the future.
Culture is no longer merely the heritage of the ancestors.
Culture becomes the continuous flow of values that are
awakened in each human being.
And the Law of the Fulcrum, from a principle concerning the
movement of systems, begins to open a broader way of looking at the development
of humanity.
A civilisation does not decline first of all because of a
lack of wealth.
A civilisation begins to decline when it can no longer
transmit the Fulcrums that make the human beings of that civilisation.
Conversely, a civilisation will always have the capacity to
be reborn if every generation knows how to receive, enrich and hand on correct
Fulcrums to the next generation.
At this point, the Law of the Fulcrum does not only help us
understand how a system operates.
It also opens a larger question:
What helps a civilisation to live longer than the lifespan
of each human being?
Perhaps the answer lies right in the Axioms that Teacher
Phạm Hùng Sơn has laid as the foundation.
A system only truly endures when it continually awakens the
internal Fulcrum of new members.
For that reason, if every human being is a link in history,
then the Fulcrum is precisely the principle that helps those links connect into
an unbroken flow of civilisation.
If economics creates the prosperity of an era, then culture
decides the lifespan of a civilisation. And under the perspective of the Law of
the Fulcrum, that lifespan is decided by the capacity of every generation to
know how to become a Fulcrum so that correct values continue to be awakened, to
resonate and to be transmitted.
THE FINAL PIECE.
In Article 17 we wrote:
The Fulcrum is the principle of connection.
In Article 18 we wrote:
The Fulcrum awakens the capacity for self-evolution.
Arriving at Article 19, in my view one can generalise one
further tier:
The Fulcrum is the principle of
transmission of life.
This is no longer merely the transmission of culture.
Not merely the transmission of knowledge.
Not merely the transmission of ethics.
But the transmission of the capacity to continue evolving.
A DEEPER MEANING.
Perhaps, after all that has been analysed, the greatest
corollary of the Law of the Fulcrum with regard to culture and the family does
not lie only in helping us understand why a culture is formed or why a culture
can decline.
What is more important is that the Law of the Fulcrum opens
a new way of looking at transmission.
Ordinarily, when speaking of tradition, we think of
transmitting knowledge, customs or heritage.
But under the perspective of the Law of the Fulcrum, the
most precious thing that each generation hands to the next is not merely what
has already been known.
The most precious thing is a correct Fulcrum, so that the
next generation can continue to explore what the preceding generation has not
yet had time to complete.
That is also the reason why a living culture is not a
culture that only knows how to preserve the past.
A living culture is a culture that knows how to turn the
values of the past into a Fulcrum for the future.
When that happens, tradition is no longer opposed to
innovation.
Tradition becomes the Fulcrum of innovation.
Heritage is no longer something that keeps human beings in
the past.
Heritage becomes something that helps human beings step
further toward the future.
Perhaps this is also the meaning that the Law of the
Fulcrum brings to every domain we have passed through.
In education, the Fulcrum helps knowledge continue to
develop.
In medicine, the Fulcrum helps life continue to perfect
itself.
In governance, the Fulcrum helps the organisation continue
to mature.
In economics, the Fulcrum helps the system continue to
self-regulate.
And in culture, the Fulcrum helps a people continue to be
itself while continually innovating.
For that reason, if one must express the entire corollary
of this article in a single sentence, perhaps we can say:
Culture is not what one generation
leaves for the next. Culture is the Fulcrum that each generation hands to the
next so that they can fly higher than the preceding generation.
Closing Article 19, and at the same time closing the entire
journey from Article 15 to Article 19:
• Education transmits knowledge.
• Medicine transmits vitality.
• Governance transmits the capacity for resonance.
• Economics transmits the conditions for development.
• Culture transmits the Fulcrum.
And when the five articles are placed side by side, we see
something very beautiful:
Every domain can transmit many things
to the next generation, but the most precious thing remains a correct Fulcrum.
For knowledge may grow old, technology may change, wealth may be lost, but a
correct Fulcrum will always help each generation find its own path.
