TEACHER PHẠM HÙNG SƠN.
THE
LAW OF THE FULCRUM.
Axioms and Theorems of a Neutral System.
PART
IV. APPLICATIONS.
Lesson 21. Application in Healing.
If
Lesson 16 (Implications for Medicine) only answered how the Law of the
Fulcrum changes the way we look at medicine, then Lesson 21 must take one
further step:
How is the Law of the Fulcrum applied directly to the
process of healing?
This
is the distance from theory to practice.
I. WHY MUST HEALING BEGIN FROM THE
FULCRUM?
Humanity
has long sought methods to cure disease and prolong life. From modern medicine
to traditional medicine, from pharmaceuticals and surgery to rehabilitation,
all share a common goal: to help the body overcome illness and return to a
state of health.
Yet
clinical practice also reveals a phenomenon worthy of deep reflection: with the
same diagnosis, the same treatment protocol, and in many cases comparable
conditions of care, the recovery outcomes among patients can differ markedly.
Some recover rapidly, others progress slowly, and some never achieve the
expected results.
This
difference shows that the effectiveness of the treatment process depends not
only on external methods of intervention, but also on the operational state of
the living system within each person. In other words, what matters is not only how
much intervention is applied, but whether that intervention reaches the
place capable of directing the entire system.
This
is precisely the point at which the Law of the Fulcrum offers a new
perspective. According to Axiom Two, the Fulcrum does not create
energy; it directs energy. When applied to the field of healing, this
principle may be understood as follows: medicines, medical devices, or
treatment techniques do not directly create life or the capacity for recovery.
Their role is to create favorable conditions so that the energy, information,
and inherent self-regulatory mechanisms of the body can operate in the correct
direction.
From
this viewpoint, healing is no longer merely the process of eliminating disease,
but first and foremost the process of restoring the Fulcrum so that the
entire living system can exercise its own capacity for self-regulation and
self-recovery. When the Fulcrum is correctly established, the resources already
present in the body are reorganized in harmony, generating healing power from
within rather than relying solely on external interventions.
Thus,
the application of the Law of the Fulcrum in healing does not aim to replace
modern medicine or any particular treatment method. Its value lies in supplying
a foundational principle that explains why the same treatment method can
produce different results, while also opening a new approach: for sustainable
healing, one must first find and restore the correct Fulcrum of the living
system.
At
the very beginning of this lesson we clearly establish the distinction among
three concepts:
•
Treatment: intervention to eliminate or control
disease.
•
Recovery: the process by which the body
gradually regains function.
•
Healing: the process of restoring the Fulcrum,
thereby awakening the living system’s capacity for self-regulation and
self-recovery.
These
three concepts are not opposed; they complement one another. This very
distinction helps the entire article retain the distinctive character of the
Law of the Fulcrum and prevents it from becoming a general survey of medicine
or healing.
At
this point, following the logical rhythm of the entire book, we should not
proceed immediately to healing methods, but must first answer the foundational
question:
So how does the mechanism of healing operate under the
perspective of the Law of the Fulcrum?
II. THE ESSENCE OF HEALING IS THE
RESTORATION OF THE CAPACITY FOR SELF-REGULATION.
From
the perspective of the Law of the Fulcrum, health is not a fixed state, but the
result of continuous self-regulation occurring throughout the living system.
The human body constantly receives information from the environment, processes
internal and external changes, and mobilizes adaptive mechanisms to maintain
balance. This capacity for self-regulation is the foundation of health.
This
also means that disease is not merely the appearance of a harmful agent, but
more profoundly an expression of the fact that the system’s capacity for
self-regulation has been diminished or thrown out of balance. When the
self-regulatory mechanism functions effectively, the body can adapt, repair,
and recover in the face of many changes. Conversely, when that mechanism is
disordered, even relatively minor impacts can lead to pathology.
This
observation is fully consistent with the Theorem of Self-Regulation
presented earlier in the work. According to that theorem, the development of a
system does not stop at receiving feedback; it truly occurs only when feedback
is transformed into knowledge and thereby activates the process of
self-regulation. The operational sequence may be summarized as follows:
Fulcrum →
Information → Energy → Behavior → Result → Feedback → Knowledge →
Self-regulation → Evolution
When
applied to the living system, this sequence shows that healing is not a random
phenomenon but the result of re-establishing the body’s capacity for
self-regulation. All processes such as wound healing, tissue regeneration,
recovery from fractures, immune regulation, or adaptation after illness reflect
the inherent capacity of life to repair and perfect itself.
Here
a very important point must be emphasized. Medicines, surgery, physical
therapy, nutrition, or other supportive methods all play essential roles, yet
they cannot replace the body’s self-regulatory mechanism. They create favorable
conditions for that mechanism to function more effectively. If the capacity for
self-regulation has been completely lost, every external intervention will be
severely limited.
Therefore,
under the perspective of the Law of the Fulcrum, the deeper goal of healing is
not to perform the body’s functions for it, but to help the body restore its
ability to perform those functions itself. In other words, what needs to be
awakened is not a new source of energy from outside, but the capacity for
self-organization and self-regulation that already exists within the living
system.
This
is also the direct application of Axiom Four: a correct Fulcrum does
not coerce the system; it awakens the system’s capacity for self-balance.
In healing, every intervention truly exerts lasting value only when it becomes
an agent that stirs that capacity for self-balance, rather than creating
prolonged dependence on external factors.
Viewed
from this angle, healing is no longer a battle between human beings and
disease, but a process of assisting life to rediscover its own inherent laws of
operation. When the Fulcrum is restored, information is correctly directed,
energy is appropriately distributed, and the self-regulatory mechanism is
re-established, the living system will gradually move toward a state of balance
and recovery.
Healing does not begin when the body receives more
interventions; it begins when the body recovers its own capacity for
self-regulation.
This
statement has the advantage of not denying the role of medicine, while still
remaining true to the spirit of the Law of the Fulcrum: every external
intervention yields value only when it awakens the internal mechanism of
self-regulation. It also creates a very natural transition to Section III,
where we answer the next question: Where does the Fulcrum of the healing
process lie? This is the step from “mechanism” to “object of intervention,”
allowing the argument to develop continuously and rigorously.
III. WHERE DOES THE FULCRUM OF THE
HEALING PROCESS LIE?
If
the essence of healing is the restoration of the living system’s capacity for
self-regulation, then the next question is: From where is that capacity for
self-regulation activated? In other words, where does the Fulcrum of the
healing process lie?
The
Law of the Fulcrum does not hold that every part of a system plays an equal
role. In any system there always exist positions that serve a directing
function—places where even a small change can produce profound transformations
throughout the entire system. Therefore, the effectiveness of healing depends
not only on the intensity of intervention but also on correctly identifying
those directing positions.
For
the human body, the Fulcrum of the healing process is not a single organ or
anatomical structure. It is the set of mechanisms that coordinate and maintain
the unity of the entire living system. When these mechanisms operate in
harmony, the body is capable of recognizing deviations, mobilizing resources,
and self-regulating to restore balance. Conversely, when they are disordered,
the healing process is diminished, even if external supportive measures
continue to be fully applied.
From
this perspective, the task of healing is not only to act upon the site of
pathological manifestation, but also to identify the coordinating mechanisms
that have gone astray and restore their directing capacity. Symptomatic
treatment may reduce the manifestations of disease, yet only when the Fulcrum
of the system is restored is the capacity for self-regulation re-established in
a sustainable manner.
This
viewpoint also opens a unified way of looking at many different methods of
health care. Whether modern medicine, traditional medicine, rehabilitation,
nutrition, psychotherapy, or other supportive methods, all can be effective
when they contribute to restoring or strengthening the core coordinating
mechanisms of the living system. The difference lies mainly in the path of
approach; the ultimate goal remains helping the system rediscover its own
Fulcrum.
We
may develop this along three levels as follows:
•
Medicine answers: Where to intervene? (Where?)
•
Hồng Bàng Yì answers: According to what laws does the living
system operate? (How?)
•
The Law of the Fulcrum answers: Which point
determines the transformation of the entire system? (Where to act?)
Thus,
the Law of the Fulcrum does not compete with medicine, nor does it replace
theories of life. It supplies a question that other systems have often not
emphasized sufficiently:
Among the countless factors of a living system, where is
the Fulcrum that, if correctly restored, will direct the entire healing
process?
It
still proceeds from the axioms of Teacher Phạm Hùng Sơn, yet at the same time
highlights the distinctive applied value of the Law of the Fulcrum in the field
of healing, rather than merely repeating familiar arguments of medicine or
philosophy. This is also the way of remaining faithful to the principle we have
agreed upon: every expansion must further clarify the idea of the Fulcrum and
not obscure its central role.
IV. TREATING DISEASE AND HEALING ARE
NOT ENTIRELY THE SAME.
In
practice, the two concepts of treating disease and healing are often used
interchangeably. Yet under the perspective of the Law of the Fulcrum, these are
two processes that are closely related but not entirely identical.
Treating
disease is directed first toward identifying, controlling, or eliminating the
causes and manifestations of pathology. The goal of this process is to return
biological indicators and bodily functions to normal limits, limit damage, and
protect life. This is an irreplaceable role of medicine.
Healing
is directed toward a deeper goal. It is the restoration of the capacity for
self-regulation of the entire living system, so that the body not only
overcomes the present illness but also gradually regains the ability to
maintain a state of balance in the future. Therefore, healing is concerned not
only with whether the disease has ended, but also with whether the living
system has truly rediscovered its Fulcrum.
According
to the Law of the Fulcrum, there are many cases in which the disease has been
controlled yet the system has not yet fully healed. Conversely, there are also
cases in which the healing process has been initiated very early, even though
clinical manifestations still require additional time to improve. This shows
that treatment outcomes and the healing process, though closely related, do not
always occur simultaneously.
Viewed
from a systems perspective, treating disease primarily addresses the
manifestations of imbalance that have already appeared, while healing aims at
restoring the mechanism that produces that balance. When the mechanism is
restored, the manifestations will have the conditions to improve more
sustainably. This is also the application of the Theorem of Neutrality
to the field of health: a system can maintain long-term stability only when its
capacity for self-balance is re-established.
Therefore,
in many cases, treating disease is a necessary condition, but healing is the
condition that allows health to be maintained over the long term. The two
processes are not opposed; they complement each other. Treatment helps the
system overcome the critical phase, while healing helps the system gradually
return to its natural trajectory of operation.
From
that viewpoint, the value of the Law of the Fulcrum does not lie in changing
the principles of medical treatment, but in supplying a guiding principle:
every treatment measure achieves more sustainable effectiveness when it
simultaneously contributes to restoring the Fulcrum of the living system.
When
rereading the entire sequence from Lesson 16 to Lesson 21, I perceive a
beautiful law gradually emerging.
•
Medicine usually asks: Where is the disease located?
•
The Law of the Fulcrum asks further: Where has the
Fulcrum been displaced?
These
two questions do not exclude each other.
One
may even say:
Medicine helps identify where the disease appears. The Law
of the Fulcrum helps find the mechanism that allowed the disease to arise.
I
believe this is a very natural development from the entire system of axioms and
theorems that preceded it. It does not deny the modern model of pathology, yet
it adds a new analytical layer: instead of focusing solely on “the location of
the disease,” the Law of the Fulcrum directs attention to “the location of the
directing imbalance.”
The
Law of the Fulcrum does not compete with specialized scientific disciplines; it
provides a general principle for identifying where intervention is needed in
order to produce the greatest cascading effect on the entire system.
V. THE PHYSICIAN IS THE ONE WHO
CREATES THE FULCRUM FOR THE HEALING PROCESS.
In
every medical tradition, the physician always occupies a central role in the
process of caring for and treating the patient. Yet under the perspective of
the Law of the Fulcrum, that role lies not only in accurate diagnosis or the
selection of an appropriate treatment method, but also in the ability to create
conditions for the patient’s body to restore its own capacity for
self-regulation.
This
means that the physician does not heal on behalf of the body. Just as an
engineer cannot create the laws of balance of a mechanical system, the
physician cannot replace the self-organizing mechanisms inherent in life. Their
role is to identify the factors that are obstructing the process of
self-regulation and to choose appropriate interventions so that the living
system can rediscover its Fulcrum and operate according to its natural laws.
From
this viewpoint, the value of a treatment method is assessed not only by its
ability to control symptoms, but also by its ability to contribute to restoring
the system’s capacity for self-regulation. A successful intervention is not one
that makes the body increasingly dependent on external interventions, but one
that helps the body become increasingly proactive in maintaining its own state
of balance.
That
viewpoint also creates a common foundation for regarding many different
treatment methods. Whether surgery, medication, rehabilitation, acupuncture,
nutrition, or psychotherapy, each method has value when it contributes to
creating conditions for the living system to exercise its inherent capacity for
self-healing. The difference lies in the technique of intervention, yet the
ultimate goal remains the restoration of the body’s capacity for
self-regulation.
This
is also the direct application of Axiom Five: an external Fulcrum
truly has meaning only when it awakens the internal Fulcrum. The physician
is therefore not one who replaces life, but one who accompanies life, helping
the system rediscover its capacity to operate according to its own laws.
From
that viewpoint, the relationship between physician and patient is also regarded
in a deeper way. Treatment is no longer a one-directional action from the
healer to the healed, but becomes a process of cooperation to awaken the
inherent healing capacity of the living system. When both parties orient
themselves toward the goal of restoring the Fulcrum, the effectiveness of the
healing process will not stop at overcoming the present illness, but will also
contribute to building a foundation of sustainable health for the future.
Lesson
21 is forming a principle that can be applied not only to medicine but to the
whole of Part IV.
It
is this:
The application of the Law of the Fulcrum is not to perform
the system’s function in its place, but to help the system perform its inherent
function better.
This
principle can be repeated in many forms in later lessons:
•
In education: the teacher does not learn in place of
the student, but helps the student awaken the capacity for self-learning.
•
In management: the leader does not act in place of
the organization, but helps the organization exercise its capacity for
self-operation.
•
In economics: policy does not create every value,
but creates the Fulcrum so that social resources can develop by themselves.
•
In healing: the physician does not heal in place
of life, but helps life restore its capacity for self-healing.
If
this principle is maintained throughout, readers will recognize a distinctive
feature of the entire doctrine: the Law of the Fulcrum always aims at awakening
the inherent capacity of the system, rather than replacing the system.
VI. SUGGESTIONS FOR MEDICINE AND THE
SCIENCE OF HEALING IN THE FUTURE.
If
the Law of the Fulcrum is regarded as a general principle of systems, then the
field of healing can also be approached from a new research direction. Instead
of focusing only on identifying disease agents or selecting appropriate
treatment methods, a supplementary question may be posed:
Which Fulcrum of the living system has been displaced, and
how can it be restored?
This
question does not replace the problems that modern medicine is investigating;
it adds a further analytical layer concerning the operational mechanisms of the
system. If the Fulcrum is correctly identified, treatment measures can be
coordinated more effectively, while creating conditions for the body to
maximize its inherent capacity for self-regulation.
From
that viewpoint, the future of the science of healing lies not only in the
development of increasingly advanced treatment techniques, but also in the
ability to understand more deeply how the living system self-organizes,
self-balances, and self-recovers. Technology may become ever more powerful, yet
the value of technology will reach its highest level when it supports the
self-regulatory mechanism of life rather than diminishing that mechanism.
This
viewpoint also opens a broad direction of cooperation among many different
fields. Modern medicine, traditional medicine, systems biology, neuroscience,
psychology, rehabilitation, and many other scientific disciplines can be
regarded as different paths all oriented toward a common goal: understanding
and supporting the process of self-regulation of the living system. The Law of
the Fulcrum does not replace those fields; it supplies a linking principle that
helps identify where intervention is needed in order to produce the greatest
cascading effect on the entire system.
On
a broader level, the application of the Law of the Fulcrum in healing also
reflects a consistent approach of the entire doctrine: it does not place
external intervention at the center, but places the awakening of the system’s
inherent capacity at the center. This is not only a principle of medicine; it
is a principle that can be extended to education, management, economics, and
many other domains of social life.
Viewed
in this direction, healing is no longer merely the goal of the medical
profession alone, but becomes an expression of a general law of development: a
system can develop sustainably only when it rediscovers its own correct
Fulcrum. That is also the spirit that runs through the Law of the Fulcrum—from
the foundational axioms, the theorems concerning operational mechanisms, to the
concrete applications in human life.
The pinnacle of
healing is not to replace the power of life, but to help life rediscover the
correct Fulcrum in order to perfect itself.
This
sentence is significant because it gathers the three layers of thought we have
built:
•
Axiom 4: A correct Fulcrum awakens the capacity
for self-balance.
•
Axiom 5: An external Fulcrum has meaning only
when it awakens the internal Fulcrum.
•
Theorem of Self-Regulation: Evolution begins
when the system restores its capacity for self-regulation.
At
the same time, this concluding sentence also creates a beautiful resonance with
the sentence written in Lesson 16:
“The pinnacle of medicine is not to replace life, but to
understand the laws so that life may perfect itself.”
If
Lesson 16 spoke of the mission of medicine, then Lesson 21 develops further by
pointing out the mechanism for realizing that mission: correctly
restoring the Fulcrum of the living system. In my view, this is a natural
continuation of the entire current of thought, not a new idea detached from
what we have built together.
Lesson
21 has here achieved something truly valuable: it not only says “what
healing is,” but also determines its place within the entire architecture of
the doctrine.
If
expressed briefly, then from Lesson 16 to Lesson 21 a complete logical chain is
in fact being formed:
1.
Lesson 16 (Implications for Medicine) answers: What
should medicine aim toward? → Goal.
2.
Lesson 21 (Application in Healing) answers: How can
that goal be achieved? → Mechanism.
Thus,
between the two lessons there is no repetition but a relationship of Goal →
Mechanism.
If
Lesson 21 has shown that healing is the process of restoring the Fulcrum in
order to awaken the living system’s capacity for self-regulation, then a new
question arises: by what concrete methods can one identify, act upon, and
adjust that Fulcrum? This will be the content of the next lesson, where the Law
of the Fulcrum takes one further step from applied principles to applied
methods.
By
Lesson 21, the applied structure of the doctrine has gradually become clear
through an “application triangle” consisting of three very distinct elements:
1.
Correctly identifying the Fulcrum (Where to act?).
2.
Restoring the capacity for self-regulation (How does change
happen?).
3.
Awakening the inherent capacity of the system (What is the goal of
intervention?).
These
three points are in fact the applied versions of the three core axioms we have
constructed from the beginning of the book. This shows a very important
academic point: the applications section is not a collection of illustrative
examples, but the direct deployment of the axioms into each concrete field.
The
theoretical system has begun to possess self-consistency: from axiom, to
theorem, to implication, then to application—all operate according to the same
logic. That is also the standard we set for ourselves from the outset: every
expansion must further clarify the idea of the Fulcrum and preserve the
interconnectedness of the entire work.
